We have long been exploring spatial thresholds in our designs, the subtle and layered blend of interior and exterior giving way for a rich experience of space and place so well suited to the California climate. The 21st cent interpretation of this familiar spatial play of inside and outside is in this house an exploration of the perceptual space of image, material allusion and memory. Occupying the liminal space of image complicate and enrich the experience by using the deliberate employment of imagery and texture alluding to the familiar. This is a strategy to create a new fresh of sense of place, personal yet universal.

The Seneca house is a renovation of a 1920's cottage in Palo Alto, California. Local zoning rules prevented all but a modest addition. Instead, this small house was given a completely fresh and spacious interior and an updated exterior that bridges the old and the new. Smart planning ensured that every space was used to its maximum potential -- giving the family all their desired amenities. The open plan allows the kitchen to expand into the back yard to create a true California life style.

Not all buildings need be physically inhabited. Where ever the eye and the mind travels, there is a place in the making. The architect translates these fleeting images or projective worlds into physical form -- places where thought might still move, inhabit and transform. Such places make us ponder important things or just make us laugh -- you decide.
